United Housing Connections to break ground on $9.9 million Church Street Place at Poe Mill

United Housing Connections (UHC), a local nonprofit that finds or provides affordable housing for adults experiencing homelessness, breaks ground on Church Street Place at Poe Mill (50 Church St.) Tues., Nov. 1.

The features

The $9.9 million development will establish a residential facility for adults experiencing chronic homelessness with mental and/or physical disabilities, with plans to open in January 2024. Its features include:
  • 36 studio apartments
  • On-site services
  • Common kitchens + laundry areas on each floor
  • Community dining space
  • Office space
  • Mail receptacles
  • Meeting space

The funding

Fundraising for the facility began in May 2019 and resulted in $1.7 million in donations from private donors, churches + foundations, SC Housing’s Small Rental Development Program, as well as the multiple grants and commitments, including:
  • $500,000: Greenville Health Authority: Healthy Greenville Initiative
  • $505,000: Greenville County Redevelopment Authority
  • $300,000: Greenville Housing Fund
  • $225,000: SC Department of Mental Health

The concept of Church Street Place is modeled after Reedy Place, UHC’s first permanent supportive housing program. Having opened in 2006, Reedy Place provides housing, furniture, utilities, property management, and mental health services to those in the community experiencing chronic homeless.

Over the next two decades, Boeing forecasts the aviation industry will need 610,000 new maintenance technicians. It’s a problem Greenville Technical College is looking to solve by expanding its Aircraft Maintenance Technology program.

We got a hands-on look at the program. Here’s how it went and how you can Try This.

What we tried (with pricing):

The South Carolina Technology and Aviation Center (915 Perimeter Rd.) features a facility with state-of-the-art technology, airplanes of different sizes, and students can see — and tinker with — real airplanes.

We got to see the students in action, working on plane engines in both the retired planes + on simulators.

You can tour the facility + learn more about the academic and career opportunities and $0 tuition for Spring Semester at the Aircraft Maintenance Technology open house on Thurs., Nov. 10 from 5-7 p.m.*

    Applications are now open for Greenlink’s free, six week program. Up to 30 students will be selected to discuss the opportunities + challenges of Greenville’s public transportation on Tuesdays from 6:30-8 p.m. (Tues., Jan. 3, 2023-Tues., Feb. 7, 2023).
