5 Hispanic Heritage Month Events in The Upstate, SC

Happy National Hispanic Heritage Month, GVL. Having kicked off of Thurs., Sept. 15 and running through Sat., Oct. 15, this monthcelebrates the histories, cultures, and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central + South America.”

The Hispanic Alliance of SCa network of agencies that work to advance the Upstate’s Hispanic communities — has rounded up a number of events for Hispanic Heritage Month taking place in SC. Here are five events to attend in the Upstate:
  • Yehimi Cambrón: Now We Thrive | Now-Fri., Oct. 21 | Hours vary | Upstate Gallery at the Chapman Cultural Center, 200 E. St. John St., Spartanburg | Free | Born in Michoacán, Mexico + residing in Atlanta, GA, this artist’s exhibition showcases the experiences of Undocumented Americans.
  • Dr. Carlos E Lavín Keynote | Wed., Sept. 28 | 4 p.m. | UofSC Upstate, CLC Ballroom, 180 Gramling Dr., Spartanburg | Dr. Carlos E. Lavín, College of Charleston Assistant Professor in Special Education, presents, “When Students Lead, We Should Follow.”
  • Las Profesoras y Tú | Fri., Sept. 30 | 3 p.m. | Virtual | Free | Join this Spanish language Facebook Live session to discuss higher-education perspectives with UofSC Upstate, Wofford College faculty + Charleston community leaders.
  • Hispanic Heritage Festival | Sun., Oct. 2 | 12-6 p.m. | Fluor Field at the West End | $5 | Join the Asociación Hispano-Americana de Mujeres, or the Hispanic-American Women’s Association for a day of authentic food + drinks, dancing and live music, craft vendors, and more.
  • Festival Hispano | Sun., Oct. 2 | 1-6 p.m. | Anderson Farmers Market, 402 N. Murray Ave., Anderson | Free entry | Enjoy festivities like live music, kids activities, food — plus, ANMED’s Medical Clinic will be on site.

Development
  • A mixed-use development has been proposed for the West End in downtown Greenville. The development (319 Rhett Street + South Main St.) would feature a Hilton-branded boutique hotel, apartments, and two restaurants. What’s next? The plans will go before the city’s Design Review Board. (Greenville News)
Real Estate
  • The building housing Revel Event Center + Stone Pin Company (304 E. Stone Ave., next to Universal Joint) is on the market. The businesses will remain in the 17,000-sqft building when it sells. (Upstate Business Journal)
Coming Soon
  • James Island-based Bohemian Bull announced a second Upstate location in the former Bacon Bros restaurant space (3260 Pelham Rd.) by the end of 2022. The restaurant will open its Mauldin location in early 2023. (Upstate Business Journal)

Approved: Water Tower Crossing plans

Plans approved for Water Tower Crossing in Greenville, SC

Final development plans for Water Tower Crossing (1007 Hampton Ave.) were approved by the City of Greenville Planning Commission last week.

The 55-unit mixed-use development will feature six affordable units, five workforce units, 44 market rate units, and 3,725 sqft dedicated to non-residential tenants. Plans also include the preservation + rehabilitation of the Thompson Automotive Building, which was named Greenville’s first official local landmark last October.

Non-residential tenants have not yet been confirmed for the property, but options could include:
  • Short term guest rentals
  • Live-work units
  • Artist studios
  • A market
  • A restaurant
  • A barber or beauty shop
  • After school care
