The annual SC New Play Festival (SCNPF) takes the Greenville stage from Thursday, Aug. 8 to Sunday, Aug. 11.
We’re shining a spotlight on this year’s never-before-seen plays, musicals, variety show, and cabaret.
The plays
Excerpts from “The Josh White Project” | Thursday, Aug. 8 | 7 p.m. | Commissioned by the SCNPF, this show honors the prominent blues + folk musician.
“All the World’s a Stage” | Friday, August 9 | 7 p.m. | Gunter Theatre at the Peace Center, 300 S. Main St. | This musical follows closeted math teacher Ricky Alleman as a high school senior convinces him to coach her for the 1996 State Thespian Competition.
“Trip Around the Sun” | Saturday, August 10 | 2 p.m. | Warehouse Theatre, 37 Augusta St. | This dark-comedy sees two Jimmy Buffet fans (aka Parrot Heads) trying to plan the time they have left on earth.
“The Dark Lady” | Saturday, August 10 | 7 p.m. | Greenville Theatre, 444 College St. | Who really wrote William Shakespeare’s female characters? Watch this musical to find out.
“Stuntboy” | Sunday, August 11 | 2 p.m. | South Carolina Children’s Theatre, 153 Augusta St. | Portico Reeves, a child whose super power is keeping his family and friends safe from bullies, struggles with anxiety, his arch nemesis, and his parents impending divorce in this musical.
The variety show
Outdoor Variety Stage | Saturday, Aug. 10-Sunday, Aug. 11 | 3 p.m.-7:30 p.m. | Falls Park, 601 S. Main St. | Catch aerialists, jugglers, clowns, and acrobats as they show off their skills.
The cabaret
Phillip Boykin | Sunday, August 11 | 7 p.m. | Greenville One Center, 1 N. Main St. | Enjoy a cabaret performance and behind-the-scenes interview with this Broadway star + Greenville native known for shows like “Hadestown,” “The Music Man,” and “Porgy and Bess.”
