Quiet up front, We’re talking indie films

Keep the projectors rolling…
In 2015, Greenville startup, The Film House launched an Indiegogo campaign in hopes of becoming Greenville’s exclusive spot for showing and viewing independent films. Previously, the company had been renting out Coffee Underground’s extra space to show movies, but without a brick and mortar location, The Film House was unable to first-run indie films (you know, the good ones like Moonlight).

The Film House was unable to meet its crowdsource goal, but if you dig independent artists + film, you should reely (😉) give them some love over on Facebook. Maybe we can bring them back?

For the newbs our there, we’re talking independent films. For those unsure how “indie films” are even defined, just think movies made outside of the major studios of Hollywood, Bollywood, and Pinewood.

For the further inclined, you can click here to go elbow deep into a bag of more definitions.

Are we just all of a sudden pumped about indie films?
Yes and no. We’re talking indie films today because of your answers to a survey we launched last month: What would you like to see come to Greenville the most? #1 was clearly a music venue, but #2… you guessed it; an indie film theatre.

What to say when...
Someone asks if you can even name one Independent movie. If it’s on the tip of your tongue, let me help you; Moonlight. The film won numerous awards last year including three Oscars in which one was Best Motion Picture of the Year.

Where to get your indie fix...
📍Regal Cherrydale Stadium 16 | 3221 N. Pleasantburg Dr. | Check out the Upstate Films Society for monthly listings and showings of independent films.

📍Camelot Cinemas | 48 E Antrim Dr. | *Sidenote: They now serve beer and wine

Pass the popcorn to…

🎥 Reedy Reels Film Festival | Gunter Theatre at the Peace Center | November 4 – 5 | These folks are promoting the art of filmmaking here in the Upstate and celebrating through a weekend long film festival at the Peace Center. This is the third year of the festival, so if you’ve missed out in the past, here’s your chance to see local filmmakers on the big screen.
🎥 The Nickelodeon Theatre | Indie Grits Festival, Columbia S.C. | “The Nick”, South Carolina’s only non-profit art house theatre puts on the Indie Grits Festival once a year to celebrate independent media producers through art, music, and of course, film.
👏 We also can’t leave here without giving a shout out to our neighboring cities who are crushing it in the indie film game. Don’t miss out on Asheville’s Grail Movie House & Fine Arts Theatre or Athens Georgia’s Cine Barcafe the next time you’re passing through.
