Yesterday, we gave you the abridged news of 2 pedestrian bridges coming to the Prisma Health Swamp Rabbit Trail. Today, we want to dig into that a bit further.
But first, here’s a refresh on what’s happening on the SRT. Map of the 4 proposed bridge locations | Map from the Swamp Rabbit Trail Extension Master Plan The Swamp Rabbit Trail Extension Master Plan was approved as of January, adding an extra 4.5 miles to the end of the trail in Cleveland Park + along Laurens Road to Clemson’s ICAR building.
There are 6 high-level goals for the development, but the main goal is to connect every nearby neighborhood to the trail (pedestrian bridges and safe traffic crossings being key objectives to execute).
While the overarching plan + goals remain relatively the same, 2 major changes include the shift of project ownership from Greenville County to the City of Greenville as well as the number of bridges to be built on the trail.
Originally, 4 bridges were included in the original price estimate — one over Laurens Road, one over Haywood Road, one over Verdae Boulevard + a retrofitted railroad bridge over Woodruff Road.
That brings us to this week. A map showing the two new pedestrian bridge locations | Map via The City of Greenville As of this week, the city successfully negotiated the original $10 million estimate down to $6.4 million.
This budget will allow for 2 of the 3 new pedestrian bridges to be constructed — one over Haywood road near Laurens Road + one over Haywood Road near Washington Street.
While a new bridge over Verdae Boulevard is not currently part of this new budget, plans for a new traffic crossing sit with Greenville County, as does the retrofit to the Woodruff Road railroad bridge.
The City aims to complete construction on the bridges by November 2022 + on the full trail extension by December 2022. Share what you think about the new bridges over Greenville’s Swamp Rabbit Trail and start planning your adventure with friends + family down the new part of the trail.
