Greenville, SC’s 2020 time capsule

Table of Contents

Boy oh boy, 2020. This year sure has been one for the books – the history books that is. Here at GVLtoday, we felt that this year should be commemorated, so that it then could be promptly forgotten. So, we want your help in creating a community time capsule.

This time capsule will also serve another purpose – it will provide a snapshot of Greenville’s history as we look forward to GVL2040. ICYMI – GVL2040 is a comprehensive plan that will be used by the City of Greenville to “shape its growth and evolution over the next two decades in ways that reflect how the community wants to grow.” So 20 years from now, when the plans in GVL2040 are panning out IRL, we can look back on this historic year and remember what life was like before those plans were a reality.

Let’s get down to the nitty grittyWhat are the details + how can you get involved? We will be burying the time capsule on Monday, February 2, 2021 at Cleveland Park Stables with Mayor Knox White, representatives from the City of Greenville, and a few other project stakeholders.

So, what will be going into the time capsule? Well, we’re so glad you asked.

Handmade masks from Billiam Jeans (But of course…2020 is the year of the mask after all.)

○ A model of the five millionth BMW manufactured in the US right here in the Upstate

○ A signed jersey + 2020 USL1 Champions scarf from the Greenville Triumph

○ An issue of the Greenville News

○ A commemorative item from the last Furman University baseball team

○ A photo of the mural of Pearlie Harris by Guido van Helten at Canvas Tower

○ A photo of the GVL Love Project

Menus from new bars + restaurants that opened this year

○ A work of art from a local student depicting what Greenville will look like in 2040 (More on that later in the newsletter, so keep reading.)

Now, this is where you come in. We want to know – what would you put in the time capsule? Items should be nonperishable, non corrosive, non pressurized and roughly sized to fit into the palm of your hand. Together with the City of Greenville, we will choose our favorite entries, and those folks who contribute an item will get to attend the burial ceremony as special attendees. Let us know below.👇
